Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has shockingly resigned as the manager of Greek side Asteras Tripolis just three weeks after taking the job.

Makelele, who took over the role on September 13, had managed only three matches before his sudden departure.

Promising Start, Sudden Exit

The start to Makelele’s tenure included a draw with Panetolikos and another with Levadiakos.

He won just his first and only victory with a 3-1 win over Kallithea on Sunday.

A bright start, but Sport24 reports that the swift exit was due to a difference in philosophy from the club’s board.

A seven-point deficit on the leaders is how Asteras Tripolis finds itself sitting seventh in the Greek Super League.

The Frenchman who redefined the defensive midfield role, enjoyed an illustrious playing career.

He won Ligue 1 with Nantes, two La Liga titles, and the Champions League with Real Madrid before moving to Chelsea in 2003 and becoming a key player under José Mourinho.

As well as time spent at Paris Saint-Germain, Swansea, and Chelsea, he coached Bastia and Eupen before becoming an assistant to a team led by Carlo Ancelotti, who guided PSG to the French title in the 2012-13 season.

His brief time at Asteras Tripolis also saw him sign free agent Federico Macheda, the former Manchester United striker.
