Super Eagles striker Gift Orban is set to leave Olympique Lyon after a challenging spell marked by limited game time and off-field struggles.
The Nigerian forward has reportedly reached an agreement to join Bundesliga side Hoffenheim during the January transfer window, as Lyon seeks to navigate severe financial difficulties and stave off relegation.
Hoffenheim Secures Orban’s Signature

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Hoffenheim and Lyon have agreed on a transfer fee for the 22-year-old striker.
Lyon initially demanded €12 million but accepted a bid of €10 million from the German outfit.

With personal terms yet to be finalized, the move is expected to proceed, marking a new chapter for Orban in the Bundesliga.
Orban joined Lyon in January 2024 for €14 million but has struggled to make an impact, spending much of his time on the fringes of the squad.
His departure aligns with Lyon’s broader strategy to sell players, a necessity to address financial woes and meet DNCG requirements to avoid relegation to Ligue 2.
Interest from Other Clubs
RC Lens and Galatasaray were also in the race for Orban’s signature but have fallen behind Hoffenheim in securing the Nigerian striker.
Both clubs had expressed strong interest, yet the Bundesliga side appears to have won the race, offering Orban an opportunity to rejuvenate his career in Germany.
Lyon’s Financial Predicament

Lyon’s need to offload players is a direct result of their precarious financial situation, compounded by a provisional relegation ruling from the DNCG in November.
The club must raise funds through sales to remain in Ligue 1, with Orban among up to ten players set to depart.
Orban’s move to Hoffenheim provides a fresh start for the striker and represents a crucial step in Lyon’s bid to stabilize their finances.
Both parties will now hope the deal is completed smoothly in the coming days.
