The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced Éric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
The Malian tactician becomes the first non-Nigerian African to lead the team.
Chelle previously guided Mali to the AFCON 2023 quarter-finals, where they narrowly lost to hosts Ivory Coast in extra time.
His dramatic reaction to the defeat, which saw him hyperventilating on the sidelines, became a viral meme. Before managing Mali, Chelle coached lower-tier French clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, and Boulogne.
Challenges Await Chelle in Nigeria
The 47-year-old faces a daunting task as he takes over a Nigerian side struggling in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles sit fifth in Group C, winless after four games. His first matches in charge will come in March against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, where victories are critical to reviving their qualification hopes.
Chelle’s managerial record includes 67 wins, 40 draws, and 41 losses, giving him a win percentage of 45.27%. However, his appointment has sparked mixed reactions.
Former NFF sub-committee member Christopher Green emphasized the need for the NFF to create a conducive environment for Chelle’s success.

Backlash Over Chelle’s Appointment
Criticism of Chelle’s appointment has been sharp. Former Gombe FA chairman Gara Gombe labeled him a “baby coach,” suggesting the NFF’s decision is a step backward for Nigerian football.
Similarly, sports journalist Hakeem Adegbenro described the move as disrespectful to Nigerian coaches, arguing that many local talents were more qualified to handle the Super Eagles.
As Chelle begins his tenure, the spotlight will be on how he tackles the challenges of revitalizing Nigeria’s football fortunes.
