Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea need just three key additions to challenge for the Premier League title.

Despite a promising start under Enzo Maresca, a mid-season slump has seen the Blues drop off the pace, with league leaders Liverpool now six points ahead.

The Need for Defensive and Attacking Reinforcements

William Saliba
Williams Saliba has been one of Arsenal’s best performers since the start of last season.

Speaking on Sky Sports via Football London, Carragher highlighted the importance of a transformative presence in Chelsea’s defense.

“You think of [William] Saliba at Arsenal, you think of [Virgil] van Dijk at Liverpool. That is what this team needs—someone of that stature.”

Carragher also suggested Chelsea invest in a goalkeeper and a striker to complement their squad.

These positions have been points of contention for the Blues, particularly given recent inconsistencies in attack and at the back.

Carragher emphasized that finishing in the Premier League’s top four is a non-negotiable target for the Blues this season, stating:

“The money that’s been spent over the last couple of years with the new ownership, they’ve changed their manager. Minimum requirement has to be Champions League football next season.”

He acknowledged the youthful nature of Chelsea’s squad but insisted that with the right investments, they could position themselves as serious title contenders.

Chelsea’s Recent Struggles

The Blues endured a five-game winless streak in the league, including draws against Everton, Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth, and consecutive defeats to Fulham and Palace.

However, a hard-fought victory over Wolves on Monday night may signal a turning point for Maresca’s side.
