Alex Iwobi has made a firm decision ahead of a difficult schedule in December.
The Super Eagles midfielder has confirmed that he will play for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The tournament, which will take place in Morocco, starts in the middle of December, right in the heart of the Premier League season.
This decision means Iwobi will miss several key games for Fulham. The 28-year-old midfielder has chosen to follow his national dream over his club’s busy campaign.
Country Comes First

Speaking to The Guardian, Iwobi made it clear where his heart lies. “With all respect to Fulham, I want to play at the AFCON,” he said.
His choice may not sit well with some at the club, but FIFA rules allow players to leave for major international competitions.
Fulham will not be the only club affected. Many African players will leave their teams mid-season to represent their countries.
Clubs often fear these absences, especially during important league fixtures.
Iwobi is one of four African players in Fulham’s squad. His Super Eagles teammate Calvin Bassey is also expected to travel to Morocco. The others may follow, putting Fulham in a tight spot when the tournament kicks off.
AFCON Gold in Sight
Iwobi and Nigeria will be aiming for more than just participation. After losing the final to Ivory Coast in the last edition, the Super Eagles are chasing the title this time.
Iwobi, a key figure in midfield, will be central to that effort.
His performances last season for Fulham were impressive. He scored nine goals and provided six assists in 38 games, his best return in a single season. That form has raised expectations both at club and country levels.
Back to Club Duty Later
Fulham start their Premier League season against Brighton on August 16. Iwobi is expected to play a big role before the AFCON break. After the tournament, he will return to help Fulham in the second half of the campaign.
For now, his focus is on helping Nigeria win their fourth AFCON title.
