Ollie watkins suffers worrying knee injury during Aston Villa’s crunch Europa league tie but Unai Emery belives it is not as disastrous as first thought

Ollie Watkins suffered a knee injury during Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League clash against Ajax, leading to concerns about his availability for upcoming matches.

Despite opening the scoring for Villa in their 4-0 win, Watkins had to be substituted in the 33rd minute due to the injury.

Unai Emery hopeful on Watkins

However, manager Unai Emery provided a reassuring update, stating, “It’s no more than a cut on the knee. Maybe he could be available for Sunday [against West Ham] but we’ll have to wait and see.” as revealed by TalkSport.

The 28-year-old’s injury comes shortly after being named in the England squad for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

Emery’s optimistic tone regarding Watkins’ potential availability for future matches contrasts with the initial worry surrounding the extent of the injury.

How instrumental have Watkins been to Villa?

Watkins has been instrumental for Villa this season, netting his 22nd goal against Ajax and showcasing his importance in their quest for Champions League qualification.

Emery emphasized Watkins’ significance, highlighting his 16 league goals and ten assists, placing him among the Premier League’s top performers.

Despite Watkins’ potential absence impacting Villa’s attacking prowess, substitutes like Duran stepped up during the Ajax match, contributing to Villa’s convincing victory.

With Villa aiming for a strong finish in the Premier League and England preparing for international fixtures, Watkins’ fitness will be closely monitored by both clubs and the national team staff.

As Villa progresses in European competition and battles for domestic success, Watkins’ recovery will be a focal point for Emery and his coaching staff.

The hope remains that Watkins’ knee injury is not severe, allowing him to return to action promptly and continue his impactful contributions for both club and country.
