Ian Wright Blames Martinelli’s Lapse for Costly Arsenal Defeat

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has pointed the finger at Gabriel Martinelli for a defensive lapse that contributed to their title hopes taking a major blow in the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Tight Title Race Takes a Turn

The Gunners had a golden opportunity to capitalize on Liverpool’s surprise loss earlier on Sunday. However, Unai Emery’s return to the Emirates Stadium proved to be a nightmare for Arsenal, with Villa scoring two late goals to secure a surprising victory.

With six games remaining in the season, Manchester City now finds themselves with a two-point lead over both Arsenal and Liverpool, who are separated only by goal difference.

Ian Wright Criticizes Martinelli’s Defensive Awareness

Analyzing the match for Premier League Productions, Wright singled out Martinelli for switching off in the build-up to Villa’s opening goal.

The Brazilian winger came on as a substitute in the second half but failed to track Leon Bailey at the far post, allowing him to slot home an easy finish from Lucas Digne’s cross.

“Look at Martinelli, this is what we’ve been saying because Arsenal have been so good defensively this season,” Wright said. “Everyone has been switched on but in this instance he switches off. Bailey is his man, that’s his man in this situation. He has to get closer to him, it’s as simple as that.”

Wright believes this lapse in concentration ultimately cost Arsenal the game. “Arsenal gave Villa too many opportunities late on and they took them. Martinelli switches off at the back post. He realized too late. That’s the difference.”

Ian Wright further compared this incident to a similar lapse against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. “The margins are so small and the same thing happened against Bayern, a couple of lapses in concentration and they were punished.”

Tough Times Ahead for Arsenal

In his written analysis, Ian Wright acknowledged Villa’s strong performance. “Villa the braver team. Great performance. Loads of injuries, midweek games, better than us in everything. Unrecognisable Arsenal in that second half.”

The upcoming fixtures offer no respite for Arsenal, as they travel to Munich this week for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich.
