The 25th Laureus World Sports Awards will take place in Madrid on April 22
Many of the biggest names from the world of sport, past and present, will be there to honour the greatest sportsmen, sportswomen and teams from 2023.
The Awards Ceremony will take place at the Palacio de Cibeles, a remarkable structure designed by the prolific architect partnership of Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi. It is one of Madrid’s most iconic buildings.
This is the 25th year the Laureus World Sports Awards have been presented and where better than a Host Venue steeped in sporting greatness? The City and Community of Madrid is home to four La Liga football clubs and the World Rugby Sevens Series; the venue for the climax of cycling’s Vuelta a España; host to the Madrid Open, one of the most sought-after clay court titles of the tennis year; to golf’s Open de España; and to the Madrid Marathon.
LAUREUS WORLD SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR
Novak Djokovic: Titles at the 2023 Australian Open, French Open and US Open took Laureus24 World Sportsman of the Year Nominee Djokovic to a stunning career tally of 24 Grand Slam singles triumphs. He finished the season by winning the ATPTour Finals for a seventh time, something no other player has done.
Mondo Duplantis : Laureus24 World Sportsman of the Year Nominee Mondo Duplantis continued to raise the pole vault bar in incredible fashion in 2023. He won a second consecutive title, a third successive Trophy and broke the world record twice to raise it to 6.23m.
Erling Haaland: He was a force to be reckoned with for Manchester City during the 2022/23 season and is nominated for the Laureus24 World Sportsman of the Year Award. He scored 52 goals for the treble-winning side – 36 in the Premier League, 12 in the Champions League, three in the Emirates FA Cup and one in the Carabao Cup.
Noah Lyles: Laureus24 World Sportsman of the Year Nominee Noah Lyles had an exceptional World Athletics Championships last year. He won individual golds in the 100m and 200m and a team relay gold in the 4x100m.
Lionel Messi: 2023 saw Lionel Messi inspire his new MLS club Inter Miami CF to a 12-match unbeaten run and to their first Leagues Cup title. The Laureus24 World Sportsman of the Year Nominee also celebrated his 800th senior career goal for club and country, and his 100th international goal for Argentina.
Max Verstappen: Laureus24 World Sportsman of the Year Nominee Max Verstappen became a three-time F1 world champion in 2023. The Red Bull Racing driver won 19 of the 22 races, ended the season with 575 points – a record for a season – and led the most laps ever during a season (1,003).
