Rio Ferdinand Opens Up About Sacrificing Management Dream for Family
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand revealed the emotional reason why he couldn’t pursue his dream of becoming a football manager.
Management Aspirations alongside Former Teammates
Ferdinand, who retired in 2015, initially planned to enter the world of coaching. He even enrolled in coaching badge programs alongside his former Manchester United teammates Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, and John O’Shea – all of whom have since gone on to management roles.
Family Takes Priority After Wife’s Tragic Passing
However, Ferdinand’s personal life took a heartbreaking turn in the same year he retired. His wife Rebecca tragically passed away from breast cancer at the young age of 34. Left to raise their three young children, Lorenz, Tate, and Tia, Ferdinand decided his family needed him more than a demanding management career.
The Unrelenting Demands of Management
“I was doing my badges,” Rio Ferdinand explained on The Overlap podcast. “I wanted to be a coach, manager 100 percent. But obviously, personal situations at home happen. If you’re going to be a manager you’ve got to be there 24/7, there’s no time off.”
He further emphasized the all-consuming nature of management by referencing his observations of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. “Their phones are never off their ear,” he said. “[They’re] not really fully engaged because they’re probably thinking about a million other things.”
Putting Family First
Rio Ferdinand knew he wouldn’t be able to provide the constant presence his children needed if he pursued management. “My kids needed me to be 100 percent with them,” he said. “With managers, they miss all that stuff.”
This realization led him to make a difficult but clear decision. “It wasn’t even something I had to think about, really. It was just like, I’m not doing that,” he concluded.
Finding Fulfillment in Punditry
Ferdinand eventually remarried former reality TV star Kate Wright (now Ferdinand) in 2019. The couple has since welcomed two children together, son Cree and daughter Shae. While his management dreams may not have come to fruition, Ferdinand has found a fulfilling career as a football pundit on TNT Sports.
“I’d be doing this anyway with my pals, going to games,” he said, expressing his enjoyment for the role. “I love it and where we get to see it first hand, we’re still close enough you get to smell it and feel it a little bit. I love it.”
