The game between Manchester United and Liverpool was a big showdown as both giants gave each other something to worry about.
The game which saw Manchester United get off to a slow start as they failed to register a single attempt in the first half. Liverpool on the other hand took advantage of Manchester United’s sloppy start amassing a massive 15 attempts, got reward for their efforts in the 17th minute from a corner which was flicked by Darwin Nunez, with Luiz Diaz getting at the end to slot it into the net.
Manchester United eventually got back into the game in the second half as Bruno Fernandez took advantage of a sloppy pass from Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah to strike the ball from about 30 yards out into the net.
The game evetually ended in a 2-2 draw with Kobie Mainoo doubling it for United and Salah canceling it out from the penalty spot, late in the game.
Sports Buddy looks at 3 huge mistakes which cost them maximum point as they failed to end the weekend at the top of the table.
Failure to burry clear cut chances
Liverpool squandered numerous clear-cut opportunities throughout both halves of the match. Dominic Szoboslai notably missed a crucial one-on-one chance against Andre Onana, one of three such opportunities in the first half alone. Salah and Nunez also failed to capitalize on chances from close range. These missed opportunities undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping the game’s outcome.
Lack of control in the second half
In the first half, Liverpool dominated possession and effectively neutralized Manchester United’s attacking threats. However, the second half saw a shift in momentum as Liverpool’s control waned, allowing Manchester United to assert themselves. Liverpool’s passing became more erratic, with players opting for ambitious plays instead of maintaining possession. They should have instead, prioritized ball retention and opt for simpler passes rather than risk turnovers.
No respect for Manchester United from Liverpool
While securing three points was crucial for Liverpool, a more cautious strategy should have been adopted in the second half. Underestimating Manchester United, despite their challenging season, was a mistake. Disregarding the Red devils’ abilities was risky, akin to undermining a wounded snake that still possesses the potential to strike.
The lack of respect was evident, particularly when Quansar displayed overconfidence, leading to a sloppy pass that Fernandez capitalized on. The players should have maintained composure on the ball, luring United players out before executing their passes.
According to Daily Mail, Jurgen Klopp in his post-match confrence said, “Disappointed to be honest [with the draw] because second half we played really well. The lads worked really hard and it was just minor little mistakes. Iron them out and we win the game.”
