Manchester City’s Erling Haaland remains the Premier League’s top scorer with a whopping 17 goals, one ahead of Ollie Watkins. However, despite his scoring prowess, criticism has come his way.
Roy Keane blasted the Manchester City striker’s overall play after a goalless draw with Arsenal, labeling it as poor as a “League Two player.”
Sports Buddy also reported in previous news that Carragher highlighted Haaland’s struggles against top defenders in recent matches, suggesting a lack of effectiveness outside the penalty area.
Father defends his son
Erling’s father, Alfie Haaland, has come to his son’s defense, highlighting the strong family support system surrounding the young star.
”Then you have the background of Keane and other experts, who may have a slightly different agenda.
”They probably think it’s a bit okay to come up with that (the criticism). But the team wins, and Erling is still top scorer, so it can’t have been that bad,” he said, as per Daily Mail.
Pep Guardiola defends Haaland
Ahead of Manchester City’s match against Luton, manager Pep Guardiola came to the defense of his 23-year-old striker, Erling Haaland. Guardiola praised Haaland’s performance since joining the club and responded to comments made by Carragher after the Champions League clash at the Bernabeu.
”He helps us to make more spaces in the areas and his contribution has been exceptional since the first day he arrived,’ Guardiola said.
”They [pundits] do whatever they want. That is not a problem. They have an opinion, I have an opinion and it doesn’t matter if it is right or wrong.
”If I give an opinion it looks like I want to criticise the pundits but I don’t. We can agree or disagree,” Guardiola said.
