Xhaka Praises Nigerian Teammates, Reflects on World Cup Win in Nigeria
Granit Xhaka, a key player in Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title win, spoke to Soccernet.ng about his experience and his Nigerian teammates.
Granit Xhaka Thanks Nigerian Fans for Support
Granit Xhaka, who won the U-17 World Cup with Switzerland in Nigeria back in 2009, expressed his appreciation for the Nigerian fans who have supported Leverkusen throughout the season.
“Winning the U-17 World Cup in Nigeria was a great experience,” Xhaka said. “I know it wasn’t the outcome the home team wanted, but jokes aside, I want to thank the Nigerian fans for their support. It’s always good to have fans from all over the world, and we definitely gave it our all this season.”
Praising Boniface and Tella
Granit Xhaka also praised his Nigerian teammates, Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella, for their contributions to the team’s success both on and off the field.
“Boni and Nathan are great players,” Xhaka said. “They’re always positive and have a smile on their face. Having them around brings a lot of quality to the team, not just on the pitch but also off it. It’s fantastic to be a part of this team.”
Thoughts on Former Club Arsenal
Leverkusen’s Bundesliga win came on the same day that Granit Xhaka’s former club, Arsenal, lost a crucial Premier League match. While happy about Leverkusen’s win, Xhaka expressed his hope that Arsenal can still bounce back in the title race.
“The Premier League is still very close,” Xhaka said. “I’m still in touch with many teammates and people at the club, and I wish them the best of luck. Hopefully they can win the trophy this year.”
Looking Ahead to More Titles
With the Bundesliga title secured, Xhaka set his sights on Bayer Leverkusen’s remaining goals for the season, which include the DFB Pokal and the UEFA Europa League.

“Of course we want to win more titles this season,” Xhaka said. “We know West Ham will be a tough opponent in the Europa League, but whenever you get close to a trophy, you have to go for it. Winning the Bundesliga is a big step, and hopefully we can add some more silverware.”
Xhaka’s Appreciation for African Culture
Xhaka’s interview also touched on his appreciation for African culture. Earlier this season, he was seen bowing to greet Victor Boniface’s grandmother at the Bay Arena, showcasing his understanding of African customs.
“I grew up around many African people,” Xhaka explained. “I love their culture, their mentality, and their kindness. Boni is a fantastic guy with a great family. It’s special to see the families celebrating with us at the club. That’s something you don’t see everywhere, and I have a lot of respect for the families who support us.”
