”I am happy because I like the kid,” Mourinho told The Telegraph, having first met Arteta in 1996 when he was assistant coach at Barcelona and the Arsenal boss was a young midfielder.
”And I am happy everything goes for him. But the way they [Arsenal] played to get that point – and the way the media spoke about a magic strategy.
The irony of criticism
The irony was palpable as Mourinho, who himself has faced criticism for employing defensive tactics in the past, took aim at Arteta’s approach. The episode underscores the contrasting perspectives on defensive strategies in football management, with Mourinho’s criticism shedding light on the tactical choices made by his counterpart.
”In my time, it was not a magic strategy. And I won at Manchester City a few times.
”But it was not an amazing strategy. It was a defensive game. Park the bus. Park the double bus.
”It was a different perspective,” he added.
