Cristiano Ronaldo’s future in Saudi Arabia appears to be undecided with talkSPORT reporting that the star striker might extend his contract with Al Nassr for another year.
Current Ronaldo’s Lucrative Deal Nearing Completion
Ronaldo signed a highly lucrative contract with Al Nassr in 2022, reportedly worth €200million per year [£177m]. This deal is set to expire in 2025, but talksSPORT’s Saudi Pro League correspondent, Ben Jacobs, suggests there’s a chance Ronaldo could stay on for an additional year.
Jacobs’ comments come amidst rumors that the Saudi Pro League is targeting Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes. This move aligns with the league’s strategy of capitalizing on the strong Portuguese presence established by him.
Strategic Timing for Ronaldo’s Contract Renewal and Television Rights
“2025 is a crucial year for Saudi Arabia for two key reasons,” Jacobs explained on talkSPORT. “Firstly, Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract expires, though I believe he might extend for another year.”
Jacobs highlights the significance of 2025 as it also marks the year for television rights renewal in Saudi Arabia. Big stars like Ronaldo, Fernandes (potentially), and Mohamed Salah in Egypt could significantly boost viewership and lead to lucrative renewal deals.
The focus for the next year, according to Jacobs, revolves around attracting players who will resonate with a global audience. The Saudi league reportedly desires another marquee signing from Portugal to build upon the audience captivated by him.
Ronaldo’s Impact and Potential Successors
Since his arrival in Saudi Arabia, he has proven to be a major success. He has amassed a staggering 62 goals in 66 appearances, with 47 goals coming in just 44 league matches. His presence has paved the way for other European stars like Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Riyad Mahrez to join the league.
However, at 39 years old, questions arise regarding his long-term stamina. By the time his current contract expires in 2025, he will be 41, making an additional year a significant commitment.
