Manchester United‘s expensive summer signing, Rasmus Hojlund, has had a challenging debut season in the Premier League. While the 21-year-old Dane showed promise with a mid-season flurry of goals, his overall form hasn’t lived up to expectations.
Neville Points to Lack of Direction
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes the team’s lack of tactical clarity is a major factor in his struggles. Neville highlights the team’s inconsistency in build-up play, leaving Rasmus uncertain of his role and frustrated by a lack of clear attacking patterns.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Neville stated, “Watching Hojlund, I felt sorry for him. You talk about the difficulty United have had putting out a consistent back four this season. But it’s the same up front.
“Hojlund doesn’t know what the pattern of play is, whether the wide player is going to go to the line or come inside. You can see he’s making good runs all the time and then the wide man will come back inside and there will be a 15-pass sequence.
“Another time he’ll drop in and try to join in with that and that will inevitably be the time the wide man decides to get to the line and cross it. Until United can establish a consistent pattern of play, being centre forward in that team will be an impossible job.”
Ten Hag Defends Hojlund: Patience Needed
While acknowledging the challenges Hojlund faces, manager Erik ten Hag remains confident in the young striker’s potential. Ten Hag compared him to their missed target, Harry Kane, emphasizing that proven goalscorers like Kane take time to adapt, and Hojlund should be judged on his own merits.

Ten Hag recently commented: “We believe he has the highest potential of any striker we looked at last summer. We are happy with him, but he needs time to adjust. He’s shown his ability to score goals, and we need to be patient with his development.”
Hojlund’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain. Can he adapt to the team’s style of play and regain his scoring touch? Only time will tell if the young Dane can overcome the challenges and fulfill his potential at Old Trafford.
