The prodigy arrives

Anthony Martial arrived from AS Monaco to join Manchester United in 2015 as one of the most coveted young players in the European football. The 19-year-old was brought in for a staggering £36 million, rising to £58 million with add-ons, becoming the most expensive teenager ever. Martial made a dream debut. He announced his arrival in the Premier League with an unbelievable individual goal against Liverpool. He became an instant hit among the Manchester United fans and showed them snippets of the brilliance they had paid for.

Flashes of genius

Anthony Martial has had his fair share of brilliant moments among the United fans. His trickery, pace and clinical finish in front of the goal was a nightmare sight for any defence. The 2019-2020 season was Martial’s best run so far as he notched 23 goals across all competitions. He developed a great understanding with Marcus Rashford on the opposite flank, and the pair looked more than handy for Manchester United. This season proved Martial wasn’t short of goals and was as good as any in his position when he gets his long-lasting form and stays fit. He was finally primed to deliver, or so many thought.

Manchester United Honours

Martial spent nine years at Manchester United and contributed to many of the club’s major successes during his time. United won the FA Cup in 2016 and Martial scored the only goal in the semi-final against Everton. He was an important member of the squad that won the Europa League in 2017. United also won the EFL Cup and Community Shield that season. He was also part of the squad that won the EFL cup in 2023 though he missed the majority of the games due to injury. On an individual level, Martial was named the club’s Player of the Year in 2019-2020, a just reward for his contributions that season.

Lack of consistency to scale the heights

For all his promise and brilliance, Martial couldn’t rise above the inconsistency tag throughout his Manchester United career. His time at Old Trafford was often interrupted by injuries which halted his progress and momentum. To make matters tougher for the Frenchman, United had a lot of managerial changes during which the Frenchman was tactically played out of position or in a wrong role. Martial often looked uncomfortable on the left-wing as he had to adapt to the needs of the manager and the team. This directly affected his ability to sustain the high levels he reached during his best runs.

Did he unlock his potential?

There are many reasons why Martial failed to fully realize his Manchester United career and the potential he possessed. The obvious one is the injuries he suffered over the years. Martial missed many crucial games during which the team needed him at his very best. Lack of consistency in the managerial setup also didn’t help Martial’s growth at United. He never truly settled in a defined role and spent a lot of time adjusting to the needs of the manager and the team. Finally, there is the question of mentality and work-rate that has been raised over the years. Martial was often criticised for lacking the hunger and desire needed to succeed at the highest level.

Anthony Martial

An emotional farewell

Martial’s departure from Manchester United signals an emotional farewell for both the player and the club. His stay was a mixed bunch of brilliance and disappointments with just a snippet of what he promised to be. His Manchester United career may go down as an unfulfilled promise but the fans should also remember the moments of joy he provided them during his nine-year stay at the club. Martial now moves onto his next chapter and he would hope a change of environment finally helps him to deliver what he was always capable of. Manchester United, on the other hand, needs to find a suitable replacement for the departed Frenchman.
