Jamie Carragher has slammed Chelsea’s owners for their “ridiculous” decision to get rid of Mauricio Pochettino. This decision came amid arrival of Enzo Maresca. The Blues parted ways with their Argentine head coach at the end of May. This decision stunned football world given his stellar work in west London
Jamie Carragher Slams Maresca Appointment
Pochettino only arrived at Chelsea last summer and took over largely inexperienced side who had just suffered abysmal 12th-placed top-flight finish. The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss was tasked with getting Chelsea back into Europe. He did as Blues finished sixth this term.
Chelsea also impressed in the domestic cups with a run to the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semifinals. But that wasn’t enough to convince Todd Boehly. “That was probably the biggest shock I’ve had this season,” football pundit Carragher exclusively told Metro.co.uk. “I could not believe it. It’s a ridiculous decision. But it’s just another one on long list of ridiculous decisions Chelsea have made.”
Chelsea have decided to bring in Maresca to replace Pochettino, a call which has also raised eyebrows given his failed stint at Italian club Parma. Maresca took charge of second-tier Parma in May 2021 – his first job in first-team management – but would only last until November after failing to lead them into Serie A promotion spots. Following his dismissal at Parma, Enzo Maresca returned to Manchester City to become one of Pep Guardiola’s assistant managers.
His second spell behind the scenes at Etihad would only last a year. Leicester took punt on him after their Premier League relegation in 2022-23. Leicester was only Maresca’s second job in first-team management. He successfully guided them to Championship title in his debut season. He has now become the fourth manager in BlueCo era at Chelsea. This follows the dismissals of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Pochettino.
