Super Eagles Shocked by Benin Republic in World Cup Qualifiers
In a stunning upset during World Cup qualifiers, Nigerian national football team, popularly known as Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat against Benin Republic. The match witnessed an early lead for Nigeria with Raphael Oyedika finding the net in the 27th minute.
However, their joy was short-lived as Benin Republic’s Jodel Dossou leveled score in the 37th minute. Just before halftime Steve Mounie’s goal put Benin Republic in lead. Super Eagles were left trailing.
This defeat has raised concerns about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for 2026 World Cup. Fans expressed disappointment and frustration on social media platforms like X. Many questioned team’s performance and coaching decisions.
One user, @omojuwa voiced his opinion. He stated, “If you can’t beat Lesotho Zimbabwe and Benin Republic, you actually have no business at the World Cup. So what’s fair is fair.”
Another user @abdool111, criticized decision to sack former coach. He now coaches Benin Republic. @abdool111 said “Sacking former coach who was the current coach of Benin Republic was a big mistake.”
@mrlurvy expressed disappointment in the coaching appointment. Saying “Who recommended Finidi as Super Eagles coach? I really wanna know. This is hurtful.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s qualification prospects, @ajibex15 highlighted need to learn from past mistakes. Stating “Unfortunately, we often fail to learn from history and end up repeating it.”
@incognito7410 raised concerns about selection process. Questioning “On what basis did they hire Finidi George as super eagles coach? Is it experience technical expertise what?”

Calls for Accountability and Change
Amidst disappointment there were calls for accountability within Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and technical committee. @poojamedia lamented outcome of appointing local coaches. “We clamor for local coaches they deliver these results to SLAP our faces. It’s sad finished.”
@emmaikumeh called for sweeping changes within NFF. “The Technical Committee and NFF who went for Finidi George should all be sacked. This team lacks direction. It’s just shame.”
With Nigeria currently at bottom of their qualifying group. Having won none of their four matches, road to World Cup appears challenging. However with six games remaining, there is still hope among fans. They believe the Super Eagles can turn their fortunes around and secure qualification.
