Hummels Breaks Silence After Terzic’s Departure
Mats Hummels has spoken out just hours after Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic resigned amid reports of a heated confrontation with the defender. According to reports, the clash occurred before the Champions League final, where Hummels criticized Terzic’s tactics in significant matches. Despite their differences, they managed to put on a united front for the final, which Dortmund lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.
Following a meeting with club officials on Thursday, Terzic decided to step down, minutes after the news of his dispute with Mats Hummels became public. Hummels shared his thoughts on Instagram, posting a photo of himself with a bemused expression and the caption, “Summarising today will be a challenge for me too.” Shortly after, Dortmund announced Hummels’ departure, ending his second spell at the club.
Mats Hummels’ Future and Reflections
Dortmund’s announcement on social media read, “A total of more than 13 years in black and yellow are coming to an end. And we will always be Borussia fans…THANK YOU for everything, Mats.” This marks Hummels’ second departure from Dortmund; he left in 2016 after eight years before returning in 2019.
Hummels, 35, is reportedly open to moving abroad, with Serie A clubs Roma and AC Milan showing interest. Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera claims Roma is prepared to offer him a two-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months.
Hummels’ relationship with Terzic deteriorated rapidly following an explosive interview before the Champions League final. Hummels expressed his frustration with Dortmund’s approach in matches against top teams, telling Bild, “I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund shouldn’t play like that – against any opponent in the world.”
This isn’t the first time Hummels has publicly criticized a manager recently. He also voiced his disappointment with Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann for leaving him out of the Euro 2024 squad, calling their conversation “short and disappointing.” Hummels stated, “For me as an individual, that’s bitter because I’m currently one of the five best defenders in Germany, and I have that confidence.”
As Germany prepares to begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Scotland without Hummels, the defender now faces an uncertain future after leaving Dortmund.
