There is some rather bad news coming out of Saudi Arabia now. Last summer, another one of the PIF-owned clubs, which are famous for buying expensive players in their league, Al Ittihad, showed interest in signing Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Failed Transfer Hopes
Kepa, who spent last season on loan at Real Madrid has been hard to be sold permanently.
Speculations of Al Ittihad’s willingness to sign the player offered Chelsea some hope of an end to the six-year strife with Kepa’s fluctuating form and hefty price tag.
This is a major blow to Chelsea who were expected to have a busy summer transfer window.
Financial Strain and Limited Options
Chelsea has recorded some improvement in the past in terms of approaching new players in, but the club is not perfect until it sells some of the unwanted players, and Kepa is one of them.
His huge wages make him a liability hence the possible transfer to Saudi Arabia seemed like the best option.
Uncertain Future
Now, Chelsea has to look for other options but getting a new club willing to accept Kepa’s wages has not been easy in the last two seasons.
If there is any transfer fee to be expected from Kepa, then it will have been better to negotiate before his contract with Chelsea expires.
The club must go back to look for a home for the keeper who has failed to impress the management after his signing.
