Ex-Arsenal goalie Arthur Okonkwo has revealed how his Nigerian father used to force him to watch Manchester United.

Okonkwo, the son of Nigerian football enthusiasts, was born in London and got an early glimpse into the sport that would define his life.

From Watching United to Playing for Arsenal

His journey started at the Hampstead Academy before he moved to Lindus Park. At the age of eight, he joined Arsenal and went through the junior system.

Meanwhile Sportsbuddy reported that Bundesliga rising star and Super Eagles eligible forward Justin Njinmah, has disclosed that Nigeria Football Federation has been keeping him under watch with a view to inviting him into the Super Eagles.

Regardless, Okonkwo supported Arsenal and had a liking for Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar.

Okonkwo said in a Men In Blazers podcast interview: “I just remember watching loads of football with my dad growing up … he’s a big Manchester United supporter. ”

“I don’t know how he supported United. I don’t know how it started but maybe his dad supported United and it has just been a family thing.

Even though he was not a red devils fan, he recognized van der Sar as a respected figure among players for his exemplary talent.

“I was forced to watch Manchester United all the time and watching Edwin van der Sar.

Joining Wrexham

The 22-year-old is a free agent after his contract with the Gunners expired last month and has signed with Wrexham after enjoying a loan stint.

Now, having signed for the League One side as a permanent player, Okonkwo remains to progress with the Red Dragons.
