Chelsea Football Club has been busy this summer, both with transfers and off-field issues involving certain players.
Ahead of their UEFA Conference League play-off against Swiss side Servette, new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca addressed the ongoing situation surrounding winger Raheem Sterling.
Sterling was notably absent from Chelsea’s squad in their Premier League opener against Manchester City, raising questions about his future at the club.
Enzo Maresca’s Stance on Sterling
When asked about Sterling’s exclusion, Maresca was candid in his response: “I’ve been honest, he will have no minutes here. I am not saying Raheem is not a good player, but I prefer different kinds of wingers. It’s simple.”

Maresca’s comments suggest that Sterling, despite his talent, does not fit into the new manager’s tactical plans, signaling a potential end to his involvement in the squad under Maresca.
Managing a Large Squad
Maresca also addressed concerns about the large number of players at the club. He clarified that he is only working with a core group of 21 players, while the remaining 15-20 players are training separately.

“I am not working with 42 players. I am working with 21 players,” Maresca stated. He further downplayed the situation, saying, “It’s not a mess like it looks from outside. Absolutely not. They can even have 20-year contracts, it’s not my point. I don’t care.”

As Chelsea prepares for their Conference League play-off at home against Servette, they will be hoping to secure a victory after starting the Premier League season with a loss.
Maresca’s focus remains on the players who align with his vision, as he looks to guide Chelsea to success in Europe and beyond.
