Nigeria’s women’s basketball team has surged in the FIBA World Rankings, climbing four places to the eighth position.

This marks a historic milestone for Nigeria, with D’Tigress becoming the first ever African basketball team, male or female, to achieve to make it into the top 10 world FIBA ranking.

This unprecedented achievement comes after an impressive run in the just concluded Paris 2024 Olympics, where D’Tigress reached the quarterfinals of the competition, becoming the first African team to do so.

Nigeria began their Olympic journey with a commanding 75-62 victory over Australia, who would eventually secure the bronze medal.

Despite a 54-75 loss to hosts France, D’Tigress bounced back with a convincing 79-70 win over Canada, securing their place in Group B’s knockout stage.

Despite bowing out of the Olympics with a 74-88 loss to the United States in the quarterfinals, the accomplishments of D’Tigress were celebrated across Africa, and the groundbreaking team has been duly rewarded.
