Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has dismissed the idea of having a home-based coach for the Nigerian national team.

Victor Boniface made his debut for the senior team under José Peseiro, has since played under Finidi George, and could now feature for Nigeria under Augustine Eguavoen in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

Addressing Criticism of Nigerian Coaches

The criticism of having coaches of Nigerian descent has been a subject of discussion, and this also forms part of what needs to change.

However, Nigerian fans still favour foreign coaches even after Nigeria won the 2013 AFCON under the late Stephen Keshi.

Boniface negates this belief; he said, “Even if we bring Guardiola, Nigerians will still have something to say.” The striker reiterated that what Nigerians must focus on is the calibre of performance being given by the team and not what people have to say.

Speaking to the Football Fans Tribe, the Leverkusen striker said, “The truth is,  even if we bring Guardiola, Nigerians will still have something to say, but I’m the type of person that doesn’t care about what people say because they’re not here with the team. Our job is to give it all on the pitch, and that’s it. It’s life. People will always criticize. So, no matter which coach you bring, people always have something to say.”

Boniface Aims to Lead Super Eagles

Super Eagles forward Boniface has not commented on the situation, and as he prepares to lead the team’s attack against Benin Republic in Uyo on Saturday, it’s business as usual.
