Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns, leading people down paths they never imagined for themselves.

For one former Super Eagles star, that turn came after he hung up his football boots, stepping into a completely different world that he once barely had any interest in.

Known for his blistering pace and goal-scoring ability on the pitch, this Nigerian legend found a new passion in a sport that many wouldn’t have associated with him during his playing days.

Osaze Odemwingie’s journey into this unfamiliar territory didn’t happen overnight. In fact, his initial reaction to it was far from enthusiastic. But like many things in life, curiosity and a desire to challenge himself pushed him to dive deeper.

What started as a casual hobby during his time at Stoke City slowly transformed into something much bigger. Encouragement from a certain coach during his Premier League days further nudged him toward this unexpected passion.

“It’s unbelievable. I never thought I could get so obsessed with this game. I didn’t like golf initially because I thought it was a bit slow – I was a striker who liked to sprint and score goals, but what attracted me was the challenge and trying to master it. The mental side of things is probably the hardest part,” the former Cardiff City forward said in an interview with The Guardian.

Osaze Odemwingie made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in 2002 and, over the course of his international career, represented Nigeria in 62 matches, scoring 11 goals before retiring from national duty in 2014.
