Super Eagles Midfielder Pushing for Debut with English New Club

Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is close to a return to the company of professionals following his impressive performance with development team and in first team training, according to his new coach Darrell Clarke.

The 26-year-old, who joined Barnsley from Chaves in the summer has made a significant progress in order to be able to make his debut for the club this weekend, when his team takes on Huddersfield Town in the League One, having shone for the development team.

The former Arsenal Academy player had his return to England delayed in the summer due to work permit, hence he could not have proper pre-season preparation with the rest of the squad.

His debut has also been delayed due to a minor injury, which kept him out since his arrival before resumption to training a few weeks ago. He has however been involved with the development team.

Clarke is now convinced that the midfielder is ready to make his bow for the reds, given how sharp and committed he is in training.

Nwakali has been making good impression with the Barnsley youth team, where he has been playing for match fitness. He was in action for 65 minutes as the team lost 3-2 to Peterborough United in a Professional Development League game in South Yorkshire on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles midfielder scored a sensational goal, struck the woodwork and won a penalty before his withdrawal 25 minutes from time, leaving the spectators in awe of his brilliance.

“He did a lot better the other day. Him and Georgie Gent are pushing. That’s what we want – players pushing for places.”, said Clarke as quoted by Barnsley Chronicle.

“The trophy game will be a good opportunity for one or two of them to stake a claim moving forward for the league games.” He concluded.

Nwakali has made three appearances for the Super Eagles and will hope for many more, if things go well with his three-year contract signed with the English club.
