TRANSFER: Chelsea move on from Osimhen disappointment, turn attention to in-form 18-league goal record breaking Super Eagles star

Maresca/Osimhen

Chelsea appear to have moved on from the disappointment failure to sign Victor Osimhen on transfer deadline day, as they turn their attention to another Super Eagles attacker, Victor Boniface, who plays for Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

The Blues saw their long-time pursuit of Osimhen hit a dead end on the last hour of the summer transfer window, as the club failed to reach an agreement that would see the Super Eagles striker move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were in search of a proven goal scorer, following a rollercoaster 2023-2024 season that saw striker Nicolas Jackson receive criticism for his wastefulness in front of goal.

The Senegalese attacker has, however, started the new campaign in spectacular fashion, scoring four goals and providing three assists in seven appearances for the Blues.

Despite Jackson’s newly-found form, the Blues are keen on securing Boniface’s signature as new boss Enzo Maresca looks to bolster his attacking options.

According to reports from Fichajes  Maresca is reportedly keen to lure the 23-year-old striker to Stamford Bridge.

Under owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea has already spent almost £1 billion on new players, but the team is still looking for elite players, with Boniface emerging as a prominent target. There are reports that a £67 million transaction is being considered.

Boniface had been in excellent form for Leverkusen, scoring 21 goals in the Bundesliga’s undefeated season prior to this one.

The Nigerian forward has scored six goals thus far in the 2024–25 season, including one in a 2-2 draw against Holstein Kiel, where he set a new personal best Bundesliga record.

With 18 goals in the Bundesliga so far, Boniface has matched the record held by the great Jay-Jay Okocha of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Osimhen secured a loan deal with Galatasaray and started in flying form for the Turkish club, scoring two goals, and providing three assists in three games.
