Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers, is unapologetically confident when it comes to missed opportunities, asserting that even the best strikers encounter the same challenge.
The Nigeria international, who has been a vocal presence for Rangers since his arrival, acknowledges that if his scoring rate were higher, he likely wouldn’t be playing in Glasgow.
The Super Eagles striker recently found the net in Rangers’ 1-1 Europa League draw against Olympiacos, though he faced some criticism from pundits and fans regarding his overall impact.
As revealed by DailyRecord, The former Feyenoord striker, however, remains unfazed, seeing missed chances as part of a striker’s life—a sentiment he believes is shared by top scorers in the game.
“This is life as a striker,” Dessers explained. “I was watching the Champions League this week, and I see unbelievable strikers miss chances.
So who am I, as Cyriel Dessers, not to miss chances? Obviously, you’re always going to miss more than you score. If I would score three chances every game, then I would probably not be at Rangers either.”
Overcoming Mental Struggles with Psychological Support
In a previous interview with Sports Buddy, Dessers shared how consulting a psychologist was crucial in helping him recover from a mentally exhausting period in his career.
After limited playtime at Genk, he joined Rangers but faced a tough adjustment, having also played in the Eredivisie with Heracles Almelo and FC Utrecht.
Dessers’ time at Feyenoord came with added challenges, as he competed for a starting position against Bryan Linssen and had to win over skeptical fans who often jeered him.
Reflecting on those difficult days, Dessers recalled, “I think I was so close to a kind of burnout at that time.” His decision to work with a psychologist, he says, played a significant role in restoring his career.
