Julius Berger, the company managing Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, has announced plans to cease operations this Friday, citing the Akwa Ibom State Government’s failure to renew its management contract.

The impending closure threatens to disrupt upcoming events, including an Akwa United match on Saturday and the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualifier against Rwanda on November 18, 2024.

Contract Dispute Sparks Crisis

The ten-year management contract for the stadium, signed in May 2014, expired in May 2024.

According to The Athletic, despite assurances in August from Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno about its renewal, no agreement has been formalized. As a result, Julius Berger has begun winding down operations, including laying off 47 employees and leaving remaining staff unpaid for months.

These financial strains have forced the company to initiate closure procedures, just days before two high-profile matches are set to take place at the venue.

Closure of the stadium could also be dangerous to the Super Eagles as it is the only stadium with approval to host a home-based match from CAF, as revealed previously by Sports Budddy.

The stadium is expected to host a Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) clash featuring Akwa United this weekend, followed by the Super Eagles’ decisive AFCON qualifier. Both events are now at risk, creating uncertainty for fans, players, and stakeholders.

With stadium maintenance and operational readiness in question, the Akwa Ibom State Government faces mounting pressure to resolve the issue swiftly.

Urgent Talks Expected

Sources suggest that the state government and Julius Berger representatives are planning emergency meetings in an attempt to avert the shutdown.

However, the ongoing tension between unpaid staff and the state government raises concerns about whether a resolution can be reached in time.

If no agreement is secured, the fallout could have significant implications not only for the matches but also for the reputation of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as a top-tier sporting venue.
