Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar has voiced his frustration over the treatment Nigerian players often receive from fans when representing the Super Eagles.
The 27-year-old, a surprise inclusion in Augustine Eguavoen’s squad for the recently concluded AFCON 2025 qualifiers, expressed concern about the emotional toll fans’ negativity takes on players.
“It’s Not About the Money, It’s About Love”
In an interview with OmaSports TV, Sadiq explained how the lack of support from home crowds affects players’ morale.
“When we come to play here, it’s not about the money, it’s for the love. But where you feel is your home, they tell you it’s not,” said the striker.
He lamented the contrast between the unconditional support Nigerian players receive in Europe and the criticism they face at home.
Sadiq revealed that constant online abuse has affected some of his teammates. “There are some players that feel down after every game because fans are killing them on social media. Football today is about mentality. If you’re not mentally tough, you cannot play.”

Limited Role Amidst Transfer Speculation
Speculation over the Super Eagles striker future continues, with Sports Buddy reporting earlier that a potential January move to Getafe is on the cards after the striker’s struggles to adapt in Spain.
Despite his inclusion in the squad, Sadiq featured for just a minute in Nigeria’s shock loss to Rwanda. His current form has been under scrutiny, with no goals so far this season for Real Sociedad.
