Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh has thrown his full support behind Augustine Eguavoen, backing him to lead the Nigerian national team to success.
Eguavoen stepped in as the interim coach of the Super Eagles after Finidi George resigned earlier this year. Since then, he’s revitalized the team, guiding them through a strong run in the qualifiers.
Though Eguavoen’s team suffered a loss to Rwanda in their most recent qualifier, they had already secured their spot for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Oliseh thows weight behind Eguavoen
Despite previously showing interest in taking the Super Eagles head coach role, Oliseh has praised Eguavoen’s leadership in charge of the team and urged Nigerians to rally behind him, especially as the team faces challenges in their World Cup qualification journey, having found themselves fifth in the group with six games left to be played.
Speaking to News Central, Oliseh said,
“Austin Eguavoen is a smart guy. He is not stupid. And I also want to say that he has my full support.
“Because he is somebody I respect a lot. He is somebody I struggled with, bringing glory to our fatherland.
“He is an honest and decent guy. Furthermore, he is my compatriot, so he has my full support.”
Oliseh’s endorsement reflects his respect for Eguavoen, not only as a coach but as a trusted former teammate.
