‘It’s been fruitful’ – CAF POTY favourite Ademola Lookman opens up on one career changing decision he made

Ademola Lookman has reflected on his journey with the Super Eagles, expressing joy over his decision to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria.

The Atalanta forward represented England at youth level, winning the U-20 World Cup in 2017, thanks to his birth ties, having been born in London.

However, he never received a senior call-up from the Three Lions, prompting him to switch to Nigeria in 2022 after several attempts by the Nigeria Football Federation to recruit him.

Lookman made his Super Eagles debut in March 2022 during a goalless draw against Ghana in the 2022 World Cup playoff. Since then, he has earned over 20 caps and scored six goals, including three at the 2023 AFCON tournament, where Nigeria reached the final in Ivory Coast.

His career has risen rapidly over the past year, finishing 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings and making the final five for the CAF African Men’s Player of the Year award. He is considered the favourite due to his impressive performances for both club and country.

Lookman reflects on life-changing decision to represent Nigeria

Speaking to Sporty TV, the 27-year-old winger shared how switching allegiance marked a major turning point in his career.

“It was massive for me because that was really a big turning point in my career. Ever since I’ve put on the Super Eagles jersey, it has been fruitful,” Lookman said.

“We have been able to achieve together as a team, and we are still growing. The togetherness of the team is something very special within the squad.

“We showed that in the last AFCON; we got to the final but unfortunately came up a bit short.

“The foundations are there, and it’s just a fantastic feeling to hold that with pride, to say I’m representing my country.”
