Manchester United have sanctioned a surprise transfer as one of their young and promising centre backs, Habeeb Ogunneye has been loaned out to League Two club Newport County for the 2025/26 season.

The 19-year-old right-back, who qualifies to play for Nigeria internationally, will be playing in England’s fourth division. While it appears like a significant downgrade from Old Trafford, the transfer is being marketed as a structured development program to ensure his promotion into full senior football.

Having impressed within United’s academy setup, the defender featured prominently in the Premier League 2, the EFL Trophy, UEFA Youth League, and FA Youth Cup.

His regular promotion through the junior ranks saw him listed on Manchester United’s bench for their FA Cup fifth-round clash with Nottingham Forest on February 28, 2024.

Despite not making an official competitive outing, he showed signs of his value in a pre-season match against Rosenborg in Norway.

Habeeb Ogunneye was born in London but of Nigerian heritage, the young man has also represented England at junior international level, further enhancing his rising profile. Dual citizenship renders him a constant target for both the English FA and Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

What makes the switch so intriguing is his reunion with Dave Hughes, one of Manchester United’s former Under-21 assistant managers, who is now part of Newport County’s coaching team.

Having a familiar figure in tow could prove to be just what the young full-back needs to come on in the best way possible, technically and mentally.

For Manchester United, the loan is a policy of exposing academy talent to the hard-and-tough realities and competitiveness of football at a lower level, something which has proved beneficial for many Premier League players in the past.

For the player himself, it is an opportunity to show that he can handle the pressures of senior football, establish his talent week-in and week-out, and possibly attract more interest from the national team.

As the campaign advances, Manchester United supporters and Nigerian viewers will be holding their breath in anticipation.
