Super Falcons standout midfielder Toni Payne has spoken with pride and a sense of accomplishment about making the change to represent Nigeria over the United States at senior international level.
The former U.S. youth international turned Nigerian star has revealed that changing allegiances to Nigeria was one of the most rewarding decisions of her career, and one she has never regretted.
From Team USA Dreams to Nigerian Reality
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Toni Payne had a successful early career representing the United States from the U-17 through the U-23 levels. However, in 2019 she made it official that she would be changing allegiance to represent Nigeria, a move that was surprising to some but heavily aligned with her personal and cultural identity.
She made her senior debut for the Super Falcons in 2021 and has since been an integral member of the team, featuring at the best competitions such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup, WAFCON, and the Olympic Games.
No Regrets” – Payne Opens Up

In an interview with Nigerian journalist Biola Solace-Chukwu on the eve of Nigeria’s WAFCON quarter-final clash with Zambia, Payne opened up on her story.
Even though I did dream of playing for the US when I was younger, when I had the opportunity to play for Nigeria, it was kind of a no-brainer and no question for me. So, yeah, no regrets,” she stated emphatically.
Payne continued that beyond football, the decision was also one of identity, belonging, and pride.
“I love being around my culture, which I wasn’t always surrounded by while growing up in the US. I love representing my family. There’s just so much passion and love for the sport here that you don’t see every day.”
A Key Part of the Falcons
Since Payne became a part of the Nigerian national team, she has been a vital midfielder with her experience, creativity, and composure.
She has assisted in adding shape and competitiveness to the team at the international level, particularly in tight matches against top-tier teams.
Conclusion
The story of Toni Payne is one of identity and destiny in football. Although she might have played for a football powerhouse nation like the United States, deciding to play for Nigeria has not only elevated her career to new levels but also aligned her with her heritage.
As the Super Falcons target continental glory, Payne is one such shining light of pride, passion, and patriotic fulfillment.
