Super Eagles and Fulham FC defender Calvin Bassey has opened up about the heartfelt rituals that prepare him mentally and spiritually before every match.

In a video shared by “Versus” on Instagram, Bassey revealed how his deep-rooted faith and unwavering family support form the foundation of his matchday preparation.

The 25-year-old Premier League star, who was recently named Fulham’s Player of the Year, shared that every game day starts and ends with prayer.

“I get up, I pray,” Bassey said. “Then after pre-match, I pray again, call my mum, she does a prayer for me, my pastor, and then I just start to lock in.”

This spiritual routine, involving both his mother and his pastor, highlights the importance of faith and family in keeping him grounded. “Stay grounded, give thanks and trust in God,” Bassey added.

Mental Discipline

Beyond the prayers, Bassey emphasizes the role of mental discipline in his performance. His ritual of “locking in” helps him maintain focus and composure in the high-pressure world of professional football.

These practices, he said, help build resilience and readiness, both key to his success as a defender for Nigeria and Fulham.

Inspiration for Young Players

Bassey’s honesty about the spiritual and emotional support behind his performances serves as an inspiration, especially to young African footballers. His message: success is not just about talent and training, but also about inner peace, gratitude, and staying connected to one’s roots.

As he continues to shine for both club and country, Bassey’s story reinforces how prayer, parental love, and mental focus are just as vital as tactical drills and gym work.
