Super Eagles goalkeeper and Udinese shot-stopper, “Maduka Okoye”, has been handed a two-month suspension from football after being found guilty of illegal betting in connection with suspicious match activity.

The sanction follows a months-long investigation that began after Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting during a Serie A match against Lazio on March 11, 2024.
The booking, which occurred in the 64th minute while Udinese led 2-1, triggered alarm among betting regulators after over “₦214 million (approximately €120,000)” was won on bets specifically predicting that booking.
A significant number of these bets were reportedly placed in and around Udine, leading authorities to open a probe into Okoye and three of his friends. The group was eventually referred to Italy’s disciplinary commission in June 2025.

Fears had mounted that Okoye could face a lengthy four-year ban for sporting fraud, but the commission ruled out match-fixing and found him guilty only of violating betting regulations. The two-month ban will begin on August 18, 2025, coinciding with Udinese’s Coppa Italia fixture against Carrarese.
As a result, the 25-year-old will miss the club’s first six “Serie A games” of the 2025/26 season and is expected to return to action on “October 19”. Okoye, who has 18 caps for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, joined Udinese in 2023 after a stint with English club “Watford”.
Though the ruling spared him a potentially career-threatening punishment, the scandal has cast a dark cloud over Okoye’s professional image, just as Nigeria prepares for critical fixtures in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
