Rangers manager Russell Martin didn’t hold back after his side’s 1-1 draw against Motherwell on the opening day of the Scottish Premier League.

Frustrated by his team’s lack of urgency and fight, the English-born coach called out his players for their poor mentality, except one: Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers.
Martin, who recently took charge at the Glasgow club, admitted his tactical shortcomings but insisted the bigger problem was the squad’s attitude.
“Some of them have to drop their ego. I’ll look at the tactics, but today it’s not really about that, it’s a mentality issue,” he said.
Dessers Earns Coach’s Praise

In sharp contrast to the harsh criticism aimed at most of the team, Dessers received glowing praise from Martin.
“Cyriel is the only one we’ve actually had a bid for, and he comes on and runs so hard,” the coach stated. “Some of them need to look at him and set that example.”
The Nigerian international’s determination stood out despite uncertainty surrounding his future. While other players seemed disinterested, Dessers’ work ethic and hunger impressed the manager.
A Warning to Underperformers
Martin issued a stern warning to the rest of the squad, suggesting that anyone unwilling to meet the club’s standards would be left behind.
“There will be people left behind if they don’t want to come. They need to understand what it really means to play for this club.”
Despite interest from other clubs, Dessers has remained focused. His 29 goals and 7 assists in 55 games last season earned him a top-five ranking in the Pulse Sports 30 list.
