President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has handsomely rewarded Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic seventh FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title.
At a reception held at the New Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the team as “worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.”
D’Tigress defeated Mali 78–64 in the final played at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Côte d’Ivoire, to clinch their fifth consecutive and seventh overall AfroBasket title, cementing their dominance on the continent.
Cash, National Honour, and Real Estate for Champions
In recognition of their achievement, each player of the team was awarded \$100,000, while the head coach and technical crew received \$50,000 each.
Beyond monetary rewards, the President also announced that each player and member of the coaching crew will receive one flat and the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour.
The reception was graced by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Hajiya Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President, who both warmly welcomed the team.
A Heroic Homecoming
D’Tigress were celebrated upon their arrival in Abuja, with fans and officials cheering them for their consistent excellence. Their victory has been described as a symbol of the strength and resilience of Nigerian women in sports, and comes just a week after the “Super Falcons” were also hosted for winning their10th WAFCON title.
