Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta against signing Crystal Palace and England star Eberechi Eze, stating the Gunners do not need him.

Speaking on his podcast, Ferdinand expressed confusion over Arsenal’s pursuit of the Nigerian-descent midfielder, despite the club’s heavy investment in the summer transfer window and the recent signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres.

Arteta recently secured the £52 million signing of winger Noni Madueke, as reported by sport buddy.

“Why do Arsenal need Eze? Where is he going to play?” Ferdinand asked, referring to the presence of Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, and Martin Ødegaard in the current midfield setup.

He suggested that unless Rice is permanently deployed as a deep-lying midfielder, a move for Eze makes little tactical sense.

Arsenal Still Interested Despite Expired Release Clause

Although Eze’s £68 million release clause at Palace reportedly expired last week, Arsenal are believed to still be interested and may pursue a deal later in the window. However, the Gunners are first looking to offload some fringe players before making a concrete bid.

Eze, who was instrumental in Crystal Palace’s surprise FA Cup win last season, has grown into a key figure for both club and country, especially under England manager Thomas Tuchel.

A Star on the Rise — But Is He Right for Arsenal?

Eze’s form in the 2024/25 campaign was widely praised, but Ferdinand believes Arteta should prioritize squad balance over star power.

“He’s a fantastic player, no doubt. But if you’re going to spend big, it has to be where it strengthens your first XI. I just don’t see the space for him at Arsenal right now,” Ferdinand added.

As transfer speculation continues, Arsenal fans remain divided over whether Eze is the missing piece, or simply surplus to requirements.
