English League One side Barnsley have confirmed that Nigerian international midfielder “Kelechi Nwakali” will be leaving the club before the close of the summer transfer window after disciplinary issues resurfaced.

Barnsley manager “Conor Hourihane” revealed that the Super Eagles midfielder has been banished from first-team training after returning late from holiday in Nigeria, a move that ultimately forced the club to sideline him from recent league fixtures.
History of disciplinary concerns
Nwakali has not featured for the Tykes in games against Plymouth Argyle, Burton Albion, Fleetwood Town, and Bolton Wanderers since his return. His repeated lateness mirrors a similar situation that led to his controversial exit from Spanish side Huesca in 2022.
The midfielder still has “two years remaining” on his Barnsley contract but has now been informed that he will not be part of Hourihane’s plans for the 2024/25 campaign.
Hourihane’s stance on the matter

Speaking ahead of Barnsley’s clash with Peterborough United, Hourihane confirmed the club’s decision:
- Obviously there’s a couple of weeks to go in the window. Let’s see where it takes us,” Hourihane said.
- When asked directly if Nwakali would be allowed to leave, he added firmly: “Yes, that’s the plan.”
What next for Nwakali?
Nwakali, who made 26 appearances in all competitions for Barnsley last season, is now weighing his next move, with clubs across Europe reportedly monitoring his situation. Despite his talent and experience, his disciplinary record remains a stumbling block as he seeks another career lifeline.
