Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has responded defiantly to speculation surrounding his job security ahead of the Super Eagles’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
The Malian tactician, appointed in January 2025, has overseen a mixed run of results, leaving Nigeria’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
Despite guiding the team to their first win in the ongoing qualifiers, Chelle’s record of four victories, two draws, and two defeats in eight matches has not convinced fans and officials. With Nigeria sitting fourth in Group C, six points adrift of leaders Bafana Bafana, pressure is mounting on the coach.

Chelle Responds to Sack Rumours
Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Chelle made it clear that while he accepts football is unpredictable, he expects the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to honour his contract if they choose to terminate it.
“I know I can be fired after one match. That’s football. But if they decide to do that, they must be ready to pay the remainder of my contract,” Chelle stated.
“When I came to Nigeria, it wasn’t because of money. I earned more in my last job. I came because Nigeria is a big football nation, and I wanted the challenge of proving myself.”
Chelle also revealed a lack of communication with top NFF officials since his appointment. “I have not had much contact with the NFF President or General Secretary. I’ve largely been on my own since taking this job.”
The Road Ahead
Nigeria will resume their World Cup qualifying campaign with a home clash against Rwanda before travelling to face South Africa on September 9. With only four games left in the group stage, Chelle faces mounting pressure to deliver results or risk an early exit from his tenure with the Super Eagles.
