England manager Thomas Tuchel has explained why Marcus Rashford was handed a place in the Three Lions’ squad for the September international fixtures against Andorra and Serbia.

The Manchester United forward, currently on loan at Barcelona, was selected alongside Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze as part of England’s attacking options.
Tuchel praised Rashford’s pace, finishing ability, and physical presence, stating that the 27-year-old can “intimidate opponents” and provide a decisive edge in one-on-one situations. However, he also stressed that competition is fierce in Rashford’s position and the forward must prove his worth to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup squad.
Tuchel’s Assessment of Rashford

Speaking at a press conference, Tuchel said:
“Marcus gives us one-on-ones; he gives us the finishing ability, with both feet. He gives us the body and the speed to intimidate opponents and make the difference. But it’s on him to keep that going.”
The England boss highlighted Rashford’s performances during previous camps, his adaptation to a new football culture in Spain, and his recent starts for Barcelona. Despite missing a previous camp, Tuchel insisted the forward still has his backing but must deliver consistently at both club and international level.
The Bigger Picture
Rashford was excluded from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2024 European Championship, but Tuchel has kept the door open for him ahead of the 2026 World Cup. With England boasting depth in attacking positions, Rashford’s form at Barcelona will be crucial if he is to earn a spot in the final tournament squad.
England face Andorra on September 6 and Serbia on September 9 in World Cup qualifying fixtures. Before then, Rashford could feature for Barcelona in their La Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano this weekend.
