Former Sweden coach Janne Andersson has shed light on his decision to decline an offer to manage Nigeria’s Super Eagles, despite strong interest from the NFF.
The 62-year-old tactician has been without a job since stepping down from Sweden’s national team and was approached by both Nigeria and Latvia. However, he chose to turn down both opportunities.
Nigeria’s Persistent Pursuit
Following the resignation of Finidi George, Nigeria made several attempts to bring Andersson on board as their new head coach.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, Andersson confirmed that he had been in discussions with multiple teams but was not ready to commit.
“Nigeria was very persistent and wanted me to take the national team job. There was a lot that was appealing, but the overall situation wasn’t great. It didn’t feel 100 percent right, and it has to, for me to fully commit,” Andersson explained.
Looking for the Right Fit
Andersson, who has coached clubs like Halmstad and IFK Norrköping, remains cautious about his next step, revealing that it would take the right project for him to accept a new coaching role.
He hinted at potential involvement in other capacities like mentorship and board positions but is being selective about future opportunities.

Eguavoen Continues as Interim
In the meantime, former international Augustine Eguavoen has taken on the role of interim coach for Nigeria.
Eguavoen recently led the Super Eagles to a win over Benin Republic and a draw with Rwanda and will manage the team in their upcoming doubleheader against Libya.
