A Star of the 2005 Flying Eagles

Atulewa was an essential player in the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup squad, where the Flying Eagles captured the nation’s imagination by reaching the finals in the Netherlands.

While Nigeria eventually fell to Argentina, led by a young Lionel Messi, Atulewa and his teammates, including notable figures like John Obi Mikel and Taiye Taiwo, were celebrated for their performances and spirit.

During the tournament, Atulewa appeared three times, playing a part in the squad’s remarkable journey to the final.

While many of his 2005 Flying Eagles teammates went on to forge high-profile careers in international and club football, Atulewa primarily shone in Nigeria’s domestic leagues, playing for respected clubs like Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves.

Tragically, he becomes the third member of that illustrious 2005 squad to pass away, following the earlier deaths of former teammates Olufemi Adebayo and team captain Isaac Promise.

Tributes Pour In

The Nigerian football community has expressed deep sadness over Atulewa’s death, with tributes from fans, former teammates, and football organizations acknowledging his dedication and legacy.

This sad loss comes just weeks after the passing of former Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Fregene, who succumbed to long-term health challenges in October.
