Ex-Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro recently opened up about the emotional toll of two pivotal moments in his career.

Bitter Defeat with Sporting CP

Reflecting on the devastating loss in the 2005 UEFA Cup final with Sporting CP, the Portuguese coach revealed that the defeat left a lasting sting, primarily due to the lack of support and acknowledgment from the club post-match.

“(Compared to the AFCON final), Sporting’s one hurts more,” Peseiro shared on the Futebol Total program on Canal 11, as reported by Soccernet, demonstrating the psychological toll of feeling disregarded by the club.  “Because we reached the final, we lost, and we didn’t even have dinner together. Sporting didn’t even give us a dinner.” he said.

Despite the high stakes, the absence of a collective gathering or support from Sporting CP casts a shadow over the team’s efforts.

Peseiro compares AFCON loss to UEFA Cup loss

Peseiro compared the stark contrast in receptions following his losses with Sporting CP and Nigeria. While the UEFA Cup final defeat left him feeling neglected and unappreciated, the aftermath of Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON final loss to Cote d’Ivoire presented a different narrative.

Upon their return, Peseiro and the Nigerian team were greeted with warmth and appreciation, including a special dinner hosted by President Bola Tinubu and national honours.

Lessons from Manchester United

Drawing from past experiences, Peseiro emphasized the significance of recognition and support in the world of sports. He fondly recalled the positive atmosphere at Manchester United, where, despite a loss, the team celebrated their efforts together. This highlights the profound impact of acknowledgment and camaraderie in the face of defeat.
