West Bromwich Albion’s interim head coach Chris Brunt has expressed concern over the loss of Josh Maja, the club’s top scorer, due to a lower leg injury requiring surgery.

The 26-year-old Nigerian international, who has been instrumental for the Baggies with 12 league goals this season, is expected to be sidelined for several weeks as revealed earlier by Sports Buddy.

A Crucial Absence for West Brom

Maja’s absence comes at a difficult period for West Brom. The striker has not only contributed goals but also served as a pivotal figure in the team’s attacking setup.

Speaking to BBC Radio WM, Brunt acknowledged the void left by Maja, saying:

“It’s not just his goals, it’s his overall play too. After missing last year with two bad ankle injuries, he’s been in great form for us this season.

It’s been well documented that we haven’t scored enough goals, and to be without him now is a massive blow.”

The injury is particularly disheartening for Maja, who had worked hard to recover from previous ankle issues that sidelined him last season.

A Team in Transition

West Brom’s challenges are compounded by their ongoing search for a permanent head coach following Carlos Corberan’s departure on Christmas Eve.

Despite the instability, the caretaker team of Brunt, Damia Abella, and Boaz Myhill has managed five points from a possible 12 in recent matches.

However, Maja’s absence is expected to further test the squad’s resilience and ability to compete in the Championship.

Looking Ahead

The loss of the Nigerian striker intensifies the Baggies’ need to find alternative solutions in attack as they navigate a crucial phase of the season.

While the timeline for his return remains uncertain, the hope is that Maja can make a full recovery and rejoin the team in the fight for success later in the campaign.
