Premier League clubs have unanimously approved the introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology during a Shareholders’ meeting today. This new system is slated to debut in the Premier League next season.

Premier League finally adopts Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) usage

Reports indicate that the Premier League has been closely monitoring the implementation of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) before deciding whether to adopt it for the upcoming season.

This technology, already utilized in the Champions League, Serie A, as well as recent men’s and women’s World Cups, was tested at events like December’s Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, involving Manchester City, and the upcoming European Championship in Germany. SAOT eliminates the need for drawing or activating lines by automatically generating a virtual line.

It accurately identifies key skeletal data points on multiple players simultaneously, such as head, toes, upper arm, and knees. Additionally, a real-time alert system communicates ball-tracking data to the VAR official, indicating the ball’s position when kicked.

During the International Football Association Board (IFAB) annual business meeting in London, FA CEO Mark Bullingham stated that the decision to adopt the technology would be left to individual leagues. However, he expressed his personal support for the upgrade.

According to a Sky Sports post on X, the Semi-Automated offside technology has finally been confirmed and usage will commence next seaso.
