La Liga has announced it has asked a lip reader to determine whether or not Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham aimed an alleged ‘slur’ toward Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood on Thursday night.
The incident occurred during Getafe’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid. After the ball went out of play, the television camera panned to Bellingham, although the audio did not pick up exactly what the England midfielder said.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Spanish top flight released the following statement: “Getafe yesterday transferred the complaint to the La Liga match director. La Liga, as it always does on these occasions, has requested an expert report on lip reading to investigate the matter and act on the basis of what can be proven beyond doubt (by the lip reader).”
Bellingham, facing potential charges and guilt findings by La Liga, could encounter a suspension. Greenwood, who was suspended by United in January 2022 amid allegations, including attempted rape, assault, and coercive behavior, underwent a comprehensive investigation. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped all charges against Greenwood in February 2023. United, acknowledging the CPS decision, stated they would conduct their own internal process before determining the next steps. Following this internal investigation, Greenwood went on loan to Getafe last year, and his contract with Manchester United expires in the summer of 2025.
