Emerse Faé becomes the newest coach of African descent to claim victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Faé assumed the role of interim coach for the Ivory Coast national team during the rescheduled 2023 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 on January 24, 2024, following the dismissal of former coach Gasset.
Under his leadership, Faé guided his team to victory over the defending champions Senegal on penalties, followed by triumphs over Mali after extra time and DR Congo in the semi-finals.
Ultimately, Ivory Coast secured the title with a 2–1 victory over Nigeria in the final, sealing their triumph under Faé’s guidance.
Faé was also honored with the title of Best Coach of the 2023 AFCON tournament, recognizing his exceptional leadership and coaching prowess throughout the competition.

Emerse Faé played as a midfielder and is the manager of the Ivory Coast national football team. On 20 May 2022, he became the assistant coach of Ivory Coast senior team under Jean-Louis Gasset. After a dismal group phase, Jean-Louis Gasset was sacked and Emerse Fae took charge of the team and won the 2023 AFCON.
