Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, suggests that Jadon Sancho is unlikely to remain at the club beyond the current season via SportsBrief, as retaining the Manchester United loanee would require a substantial financial commitment.
Sancho, back on loan at Dortmund since January after a challenging stint at Old Trafford post his significant 2021 transfer, faced exclusion from the first team due to a public disagreement with United head coach Erik ten Hag.
What would it cost to retain Jadon Sancho?
Dortmund’s sporting director, Kehl, stated on Sport1 that retaining Sancho would require a substantial financial investment, exceeding the club’s current resources.
“We received over 80 million euros for Jadon. Manchester United will undoubtedly be interested in either bringing him back in the summer or orchestrating a sensible deal for his sale.
Whether such an arrangement aligns with our interests will be the next point of discussion,” explained Kehl.
Jadon Sancho, a consistent starter under coach Edin Terzic since returning to Dortmund, is yet to reach the dazzling form he displayed during his initial four-year spell, accumulating 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games.
Kehl on Ian Maatsen
Kehl added that retaining Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen would pose a challenge for Dortmund, emphasizing the club’s need to secure qualification for the Champions League.
The Dutchman joined Dortmund on loan in January, with his tenure set to conclude at the end of the season.
Kehl stated, “Chelsea have neither economic problems nor a problem finding a place for him in England.” While Dortmund will make efforts to retain Maatsen, the outcome is dependent on developments.
He emphasized the crucial importance of qualifying for the Champions League, with Dortmund currently holding the fourth position in the Bundesliga, one point ahead of fifth-placed RB Leipzig.
